Resilience in Restriction: The Story of Muskan and Fiza
Muskan and Fiza, two determined sisters from Bawa Lallavi, are active participants in Sanchetna’s Health Club. Despite their ambition and leadership skills, they face significant barriers due to family restrictions.
Both sisters are eager to progress in life and aspire to continue their education and leadership training. However, their parents and elder brothers prohibit them from going out, significantly limiting their opportunities. Initially, their brothers refused to let them attend leadership training. Only after their mother persuaded the brothers were the sisters allowed to attend, but only if their mother accompanied them. Due to her inability to walk, the mother struggled to attend, but she still managed to accompany them for the training.
Muskan and Fiza were keen to complete their 10th-grade education. Sanchetna facilitated their enrolment in a free learning school. Unfortunately, their family soon discontinued their education, insisting that they should stay home. The sisters’ mother expressed her helplessness, citing their father’s prohibitions and the verbal abuse she faced if she contradicted him. Even their sister-in-law suggested they learn skills at home and earn money, questioning the value of further education. Despite the oppressive environment, Muskan and Fiza continue to be involved in Sanchetna’s programs, albeit under significant constraints. Their story highlights the ongoing struggle for educational and personal freedom faced by young women in their community.
This case underscores the importance of continued support and advocacy for girls like Muskan and Fiza. Sanchetna remains committed to finding ways to empower them and others facing similar challenges, aiming to break the cycle of restriction and empower young women through education and skill development.
